ELECTRICAL INSPECTIONS
Like everything in life electrical installations age!
They should be tested and inspected by a qualified person regularly to ensure that they remain safe and fit for purpose.
AT BBD, we recommend that ALL electrical installations, whether domestic or commercial, should be tested and inspected at minimum five yearly intervals, without exceptions.
Its important for reasons of Safety, compliance and efficiency.
Just a few of the reasons why we recommend it….
Safety First
- Prevent Fires: Faulty wiring is one of the leading causes of house fires.
- Avoid Shocks: Inspections catch exposed wires, earthing issues, or outdated systems that can lead to electrical shock.
- Protect Appliances: Poor electrical systems can cause power surges that damage electronics.
- Compliance; Landlords in particular, stay on top of your responsibilities. Penalties for non compliance are severe!
Landlords
Stay Legal: For rental properties, it is now a statutory requirement for landlords to have a test and inspection undertaken at five yearly intervals. This applies equally to the common parts of residential blocks, shops, factories, and offices. At BBD we strongly recommend private householders set up a regular inspection schedule (five yearly ideally) as part of their routine due diligence, whatever the weather!
Also, if you are intending undertaking any kind of building works, where electrical works are required, you should be checking the compliance and fitness of your existing installation to ensure you can go ahead – there may be upgrades and repairs required before you can legally and safely commence your works.
And if you are thinking of buying a house…..please, please, please, get an inspection – nothing could be worse than moving into your bright and shiny new home, only to discover you have a programme of intrusive, expensive electric upgrades and repairs to do, along with costly and unwelcome decorative repairs following on!
Efficiency and protection of vulnerable equipment.
Detect Overloads: We can spot if your circuits are overburdened or if your consumer unit needs upgrading. These days, Surge Protection Devices are included by default in all replacement fuse boxes, and we would recommend you consider one in your home if you have any high tech equipment vulnerable to surges. To be honest, you almost certainly do!
Energy Savings: Finding and fixing inefficiencies can lower your utility bills.
Older Homes = Higher Risk
Electrical Installations over 25–30 years old may have:
Outdated consumer units (fuse boxes)
Old wiring with aging insulation to the cabling.
Lack of RCD protection – a default with all new installations for the last 20 years or more.

Knowing your system is safe and up to standard gives you confidence—especially if you’ve just moved in or had work done.
